A serial entrepreneur and property developer, Carl Gouw has had a passion for real estate ever since his earliest memories and launched his first project when he was eighteen. With his hands-on experience in project creation and management, and a vision to explore new markets, in 2005 he founded ACTS Group, a property developer and construction enterprise. His wealth of insights and tenure in crafting successful property and hospitality ventures and appreciation for communities sparked the idea for Canvas, a lifestyle brand launched in 2019. With Canvas, Carl envisions to connect and nurture people, ideas, experiences and places through a platform that delivers purposeful experiences through a membership programme, hotels and residential developments.
Carl is also the Managing Director of Goldig Investment Group, an organisation involved in real estate investment since the 1970s who was substantial shareholder of a Hong Kong-listed Guangzhou developer. Committed to enhancing the community and nurturing cultural activities, he is an active member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization and a former member of its Asia-Pacific Regional Council, a member of PMQ’s Assessment Panel, a founding member and former Director of the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design, and founding Chairman of Culture Care (Hong Kong). He is an advisor to the Hong Kong Church Network of the Poor, and a board member of Hope of the City Foundation. Having written pieces on cultural issues and the business of design, Carl’s work has been featured in publications such as Baccarat and Capital Entrepreneur. In 2014, he was included in Perspective magazine’s prestigious ‘40 under 40’ list.

Joshua is the Chief Operating Officer of Canvas and Co-Founder of Canvas Belong. Prior to joining Canvas, Joshua was part of Jefferies Financial Group’s leadership in Asia, and has worked at UBS, Nomura and Lehman Brothers in various senior roles. A natural extrovert, Joshua is most inspired when he is immersed in different cultures and meeting new people, and revel in local experiences. His innate ability to connect to unique opportunities and discover extraordinary locales helps him understand that broad contexts of different places. He is excited to enjoy these experiences with fellow Canvas Citizens across Asia.
Director – Canvas Place
Pierre is Director of Canvas Place. He started his career working for a number of years at Groupe Pierre & Vacances, a tourism and leisure company listed in France. He founded his own consulting company in 2011 in Hong Kong focusing on international real estate and hospitality projects. He opened a boutique hotel in Bali in 2013. A French native, Pierre is passionate about wine, gastronomy and experiential travel.
Founder of creative consultancy firm Debut Studio Cybil Chiu was born with an eye for design and an instinct for style. With over 60 projects under her portfolio, Cybil’s work has graced numerous acclaimed hotel groups across the region, such as Artyzen Group, Hyatt International, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Marriott International and Rosewood. Accoladed properties such as CitizenM Shanghai, Rosewood Sanya, Park Hyatt Sanya and Mandarin Oriental Guangzhou feature her curation at its best. Cybil is an art consultant and the Creative Director of Hotel Stage, a boutique hotel in Hong Kong. She was also the Design Consultant for the Lead Estate Group’s private museum in Xiamen.
Deeply passionate about art, she was awarded in 2018 by Interior Design China for merit in art curation. A founding member of Culture Care (Hong Kong) and board member for Lung Kong World Federation School in Hong Kong, she supports numerous community art projects with organisations such as UOB Art Academy, UNESCO and Hong Kong University.
Trained as a fashion designer, artist and sociologist, Grace takes a philosophical route to her work. Fascinated about people, community and living, she examines the cultural influence and social context within art and design movements, travel and shifts in the way people live and interact with each other. Prior to Canvas, Grace worked as a noted designer, retailer and trend forecaster based in New York City and Hong Kong. After moving to Shanghai seven years ago, she took on the role of art director and cultural reporter at a global brand consultancy, where she used various forms of design and ethnography to research, communicate ideas and interact with the audience. At Canvas, Grace brings a cultural and design perspective to each project as she remains committed to working within the social intersections of design and arts to contribute to the overall brand vision.
